Porcelain Veneers

If you have stained, gapped, or chipped teeth, porcelain veneers could be an option to make them look flawless. Veneers are a wafer-thin piece of porcelain shells that cover your teeth. Veneers provide more strength and resilience than the natural enamel of your teeth. Veneers are irreversible. So getting one is a big decision. Before you decide on getting veneers, you must have the right information and know what care veneers require.

Porcelain Veneers

Dental Veneers can be either made from porcelain or resin composite material. Porcelain is the choice of material for dental veneers. It gives a better tooth-like appearance. Porcelain veneers can last anywhere between 10 to 20 years. They can cost between $800- $2000.

Procedure for Veneers

Identifying the Issue and Planning for a Treatment

In the beginning, you will discuss with your dentist why you want to get Venners. The dentist conducts a thorough examination of your teeth to tell you the right type of veneers matching your requirements. They will then talk about treatment and limitations. Your dentist will take an X-ray of your mouth. In many cases, they take the impression without an x-ray as well.

Preparation

Tooth enamel removal is an essential part of preparing teeth for veneers. Before the trimming of the enamel, consult with your dentist to decide whether you need local anesthesia for numbing the area. Then your dentist will take an impression of the mouth and send it to the dental laboratory to custom create the veneers. It can take around a month or less for veneers to return to the dentist. However, during this time, your dentist may place a temporary veneer with spot etching.

Placing the Veneers

Before your dentist permanently attaches the veneers, they will place it temporarily to check the fit and color. Your dentist will repeatedly trim and remove the veneer to bring it to a perfect fit. The amount of cement and shade can adjust the color of the veneer.

To prepare the teeth for veneer, cleaning with water, polishing, and etching are some processes your dentist will conduct. The etching will roughen the tooth surface for better attachment of the veneer.

Next, your dentist will apply special cement on the teeth and put the veneer over it.  Then they will remove the excess cement from your mouth or will ask you to spit it out. The dentist will evaluate your bite and would make necessary adjustments if needed. Your teeth will receive a 60-second light-cure treatment. Your dentist will call you for a follow up some days later to see how well your teeth and gums have become adaptable to the veneers.

Care for Veneers

It is important to take good care of the veneers so that they last long. Maintaining regular brushing and flossing are pretty obvious things to do. You should use non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste to keep your veneers clean. Avoid eating and drinking very hot or cold foods. As some of your enamel is removed, your teeth may become more sensitive to heat and coldness.

Keep in mind that you will need to replace the veneers. Regardless of how good you take care of them, they are going to get changed. But do maintain good oral conditions to make your veneers last longer.
